Carteret announces part time openings for various Emergency Service positions

Carteret, NJ – Mayor Daniel J. Reiman has announced openings for various part-time emergency service positions that include:

 

  • Special Law Enforcement Officer Class II
  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Public Safety Telecommunicator (Police 911 Dispatch)

Special Law Enforcement Officers Class II are sworn part time police officers that may only work up to 20 hours per week. While on duty they have the same police authority as regular full time police officers. Class II Special Police Officers must successfully complete all training required by statute at a New Jersey State certified Police Academy.

 

SLEO II positions will pay $20 / hour for 20 hours a week of work that will include the same responsibilities as full-time police officers.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

 

  • Be a resident of the State of New Jersey during the term of prospective appointment
  • Be able to read, write and speak English fluently
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent, and two years of college education or military experience
  • Undergo the same psychological testing that is required of all full-time police officers in the Borough
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Must not possess any physical impairment that would interfere with the performance of their duties
  • Must possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License with a good driving record

Priority will be given to Carteret residents, as well as applicants who have previously served as qualified, fully trained officers in any municipality of New Jersey, and who have completed their service in good standing.

 

Class II Special Police Officers may be appointed to successive one-year terms, during which they will perform duties similar to those performed regularly by members of the Carteret Police force. They may also be afforded special consideration for permanent police officer appointments having completed their term in good standing.

 

Criminal background checks may be performed for applicants.

Emergency Medical Technicians will be paid $12-$17 per hour for up to 30 hours of work a week that will include answering all calls for emergency medical treatment, driving or riding in ambulances to required locations.

 

Applicants are required to possess a current Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Certification valid in New Jersey. Applicants who possess the higher level certification as a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic, or Mobile Intensive Care Registered Nurse Certification, issued by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, are considered to have met the above certification requirement.

 

All EMTs will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, and related units.

 

Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

 

Hires will have knowledge of the principles of emergency medical and first aid treatment, the techniques used to administer pulmonary and cardiac resuscitation, the techniques used to administer oxygen, and knowledge of appropriate emergency treatment depending on a patient’s condition. They must have the ability to remain calm in an emergency situation, to establish rapport with patients, to drive an ambulance with caution, to work harmoniously with others, to determine the nature and extent of injury and provide emergency medical treatment, to administer first aid, CPR and other emergency medical care, and to prioritize emergency medical treatment needs. EMTs will also have the ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. The ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position will be required.

Public Safety Telecommunicator (Police 911 Dispatchers) will be paid $12-$17 per hour for up to 30 hours of work that will include receiving and responding to telephone or other electronic requests for emergency assistance including law enforcement, fire, medical, or other emergency services, dispatching appropriate units to response sites, and other related duties as required. Appointments may be made to positions requiring bilingual skills.

 

Appointees to positions at Public Safety Answering Points and at some Public Safety Dispatch Points must successfully complete training and obtain certification by the Office of Emergency Telecommunications Services (OETS) in the Department of Law and Public Safety as required by NJAC 17:24- 2.2, during the trainee period. Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

 

Hires will have knowledge of methods for operating communications systems, procedures used for emergency medical treatment, emergency medical, fire, police, and other emergency terminology, procedures for dispatching emergency and nonemergency equipment and personnel after a period of training.
