Roundabout Construction to improve traffic flow and safety at 5 point intersection

Carteret, NJ – Mayor Dan Reiman and Councilman Dennis Dimascio announced the award of a $174, 917.55 capital construction contract to S Brothers Inc of South River.  The project calls for the construction of a “round about” at the five point intersection of Holly Street, Terminal Avenue and Pershing Avenue.  The purpose of the circle is to reduce vehicle speeds while maintaining traffic flow and to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety.

The roundabout is being constructed to address an intersection that does not meet current traffic standards.   The roundabout will include five pedestrian cross-walks, curb ramps to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and a center island with a mountable curb for larger vehicles (fire trucks, ambulances, etc.).  Improvements to both striping and lighting will also help address concerns with the intersection.

“The installation of a roundabout will help with traffic flow and improve safety,” said Mayor Reiman.  “I’ve been a resident of Carteret for thirty-one years and I know first-hand the concern about this Intersection.  This roundabout will be a much needed improvement,” said Councilman Dimascio.
The funding is part of the Borough’s 1 million annual capital budget.
