Carteret participates in Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, national campaign to raise awareness about impaired driving

CARTERET, NJ – From Dec. 5 to Jan. 1, the Borough Police Department will participate in Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, a national campaign to raise awareness about impaired driving during the winter holiday season.

Spearheaded in New Jersey by the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety, the campaign aims to help deter drunk driving and prevent impaired driving-related injuries and deaths throughout what’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. Unfortunately, the holiday season typically sees spikes in drunk driving crashes, according to the Division.

“We hope all of Carteret has a very happy holiday season,” Mayor Daniel J. Reiman said, “but we also want to make sure that everyone stays safe. That’s why Carteret is happy to help amplify the state’s Drive Sober messaging and engage our residents, visitors and commuters effectively.”

In addition, the state Attorney General’s Office will be issuing a Dec. 5 Driver Sober press release on its social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and X.

According to the state AOG’s Office, the Drive Sober campaign appears to be working because fatal accidents have decreased from 709 in 2006 to 647 in 2024. Since 2006, there have been throughout the State of New Jersey, 11,489 fatal crashes, 12,229 deaths and 7,757 injuries. During that time period, 13 fatal crashes took place in Carteret, resulting in 14 fatalities and 18 injuries.

“Carteret actually is one of the safer communities in New Jersey in regards to traffic, but we must remain vigilant to prevent as many traffic accidents as possible.” Mayor Reiman said.

“The No. 1 priority of the Carteret Police Department is the safety and well-being for all of its community members, family, friends and visitors,” Carteret Police Chief Ted Nycz added. “The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign is a reminder to all drivers of the dangers and consequences while driving impaired. Let’s enjoy the Holiday Season and make the safe and responsible decisions that will not only protect you, but everyone around you”.
