Carteret to Host 6th Annual Carteret Conquers Cancer Walk

Carteret, NJ – The Borough will be hosting a 5k Walk/Run on May 20th at the Carteret Middle School on Carteret Avenue.  Registration will begin at 7:30 AM with the race commencing at 8:30 AM.  The $10 registration fee is a donation to the American Cancer Society.

The Carteret Conquers Cancer 5k was started in 2012 by Amber Melo and Amanda Joyce, both Carteret High School students at the time.  The walk was dedicated to the memory of Jessica Kushner, a Carteret High School graduate who passed away after a battle with cancer.  She was valedictorian of her class, having graduated in 1997. Both of Jessica’s parents are educators in the Carteret School District.
The walk has raised over $75,000 to support organizations, such as the American Cancer Society and local residents who are fighting cancer.  The walk has continued to grow attracting somewhere between 500 and 600 participants annually.

“It is very impressive that Amber and Amanda were able to grow the scope of the walk over these last few years and raise awareness,” said Mayor Reiman.  “The fact that they have continued the walk while attending college really shows the caliber of their character and how much the cause means to them.”

Individuals wishing to participate in the walk or who would like to make a donation to the cause can do so by going to the website – www.relayforlife.org/carteretconquerscancer.
