Carteret, NJ – following up on a pledge made earlier in the year at his State of the Borough Address, Mayor Daniel J. Reiman has announced that approximately $4 million has been earmarked for local street improvements as part of the Borough’s ongoing capital budget and Road Improvement Program.
Local roads targeted for improvements during 2013-2014 include the following:

- Intersection of Minue Street and Bryla Street
- Parking areas on Germak Drive and Milik Street
- Matthew Avenue (all)
- Oak Street (Varga St. to Harrison St.)
- Capp Street (Jackson Ave. to Soltes Ave.)
- High Street (Terminal Ave. to Carteret Ave.)
- Hayward Avenue (Roosevelt Ave. to Beverly St.)
- Grant Avenue (Charles St. to dead end)
- Lincoln Avenue (Roosevelt Ave. to Charles St.)
- Jeanette Avenue (Hayward Ave. to John St.)
- Fillmore Avenue (Coolidge Ave. to Carteret Ave.)
- Fillmore Avenue (Oak St. to E. Cherry St.)
- Elm Street (Fillmore Ave. to Barlik St.)

Milling and overlay have been planned for targeted streets, along with upgrades to handicap ramps, inlet replacement or repairs where needed, and curb, sidewalk, and driveway apron replacement. Targeted intersections will also receive new handicap ramps and pavement repairs where needed.
$644,000 in improvements along Sycamore Street and Soltes Avenue, begun last year, will continue, along with the overlay of four intersections and the surface course paving of Essex Street.
These areas are among many local roads to receive upgrades in the last few years. Residents have recently seen the completion of $2.8 million in street improvements to Tennyson Street and Lower Roosevelt Avenue. The Tennyson Estates project area consisted of Whitman Street, Patrick Street, Sunset Court, Tennyson Street, Charlotte Street, Holmes Street, Lexington Avenue, and Longview Terrace, for a total of $1,700,000.00 in repairs, funded through the Borough’s Capital Improvement Fund. Improvements included concrete curb and gutter installation throughout the project area along with pavement reconstruction along the curb line and an asphalt overlay. Also included were new driveway aprons with new handicapped ramps and sidewalk where necessary. Improved drainage was made possible through stormwater and sanitary sewer system upgrades.
Streetscape improvements begun along Washington Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue have also been completed, with the application of $185,974 in Capital Improvement funding. Improvements included new street trees and amenities, and new stamped concrete sidewalks.
Mayor Reiman said, “We’ve been looking to the future with many of our capital improvement projects, identifying areas in need and providing comprehensive repairs and enhancements that will last us many years. We have made a pledge to our residents to improve all of our streets that are in a state of disrepair. The Borough Council and I are committed to that promise.”
